A very sad & devastating way to start 2011 with the horrific floods seen throughout Queensland, Northern New South Wales & now into Victoria. Not since 1974 have we seen such treacherous conditions & my thoughts go out to any members, friends or families who have been affected by the floods. We really did miss the deluge on the coast. When the rest of the South East corner was being hammered by rain the Gold Coast corridor seemed to miss most of it. In saying that we still managed to record 172mm for the month keeping the course still very wet under foot. The greens have recovered well from the December renovations. Considering the 600mm of rain for the month coupled up with low temperatures they have been under extreme pressure of late & are at about 85% to where I would like them. Not only did the rain flush any sodium build up in the greens profile which is a positive, it also flushes away the valuable nutrients we require for healthy turf. Additionally we have been applying liquid feeds to keep the greens ticking over nicely & soil amendments trying to get the balance correct. The roughs have been growing out of control with many of the days to wet to get machinery out of the shed. On the days we could utilise all mowers the boys were doing 12 hour days just to try & get on top of the roughs. All tees & surrounds along with all fairways have been sprayed with a herbicide for weed eradication. We will apply 2-3 applications, 7-10 days apart over the next few weeks. There is a yellowing off on these surfaces due to the salt based nature of the herbicide. Thanks for your patience during these testing times with the inclement weather. The team is dedicated to the course & want to see it back in sensational condition sooner than you do. See you on course, Glenn Beauclerc. Your Friendly Course Superintendent.

Normally the rain dominates the topic of conversation each month but that was not the case for November. The coldest November in decades resulted in temperatures remaining in the mid 20’s, with not one day recorded over 30 degrees (why did I bother putting in a pool at home!)
With little growth during the month & the annual greens renovations around the corner we focused on full course mowing to ensure the rest of the course was in good order whilst we ripped up our greens.
We under took a couple of construction projects around the tee stations during the month with the 13thbridge getting “The Great Wall” built & a new sleeper walkway to the men’s 5th tee, complete with hand rail for those with aging bodies..
To the Reno’s:
- All greens were scarified at -3mm 6 times over.
- Cored with 12mm hollow tynes
- Pick up with the core harvester
- Fertilised
- Soli amendments added
- Top-dressed
- Broomed in
I can't speak highly enough of the maintenance team who completed this year’s greens renovation by Tuesday evening after completing 2 days of 14 hour shifts.

From all reports & weather gurus it was stated that October 2010 was officially the wettest October on record & I think they were pretty close to the mark. In all 335mm was collected of which 303mm fell in the first 13 days. Spare a thought for the course maintenance team who on 3 occasions managed to get all bunkers drained, pushed up, broomed, raked, & back in play on to see them washed down again that night. Full credit to there commitment because not too many days passed with bunkers having to be GUR.
With all the rain around & the greens flooding on several occasions we implemented a solid tyne aeration to try &promote air into the profile & prevent algae from dominating the putting surface. It’s not all bad news however with so much rain falling as it helps flush the greens profile of any sodium build up, which is detrimental towards healthy turf.
Carts on paths had to be implemented for a good deal of the month & as the signs suggests this is when you are required to drive all motorised carts on the bitumen paths for the entire round. Unfortunately we still had to retrieve carts from out of creeks during this carts on path period. Please remember we only instigate the carts on path rule for two reasons;
1. The protection of the golf course
2. The safety of all golfers
A busy month for the maintenance team not only keeping the course in good condition but also keeping the neighbouring residents happy. On one day I received 10 phone calls regarding fallen trees & branches from the previous night’s storm. Thankfully no damage to any homes or fences occurred. Chainsaw’s & the mulcher was the order for the day with the resulting mulch being utilised on the 1st, 5th & 15th tee gardens.
Projects for the month were the expansion of the buggy path on the 12th tee along with new block retainment on the 13th bridge gardens.
