“September Means Fairway Renovations”
Well it was that time of year again………..Fairway Renovations!
Yep the time of year that we love & golfers hate. Unfortunately it is the most important part of our cultural practices for growing healthy turf. Why is aeration of fairways so important I hear you ask?
Well quite simply we are increasing the oxygen & water exchange in the profile as well as decreasing compaction & creating an entry point in which we can put soil amendments. This relatively simple process is called hollow tyne aeration.
This course of action involves punching 19mm hollow tynes into the fairways to a depth of 100mm. The exiting tynes are left on the fairways to dry before being smashed up & rubbed in with an old fairway mower. This creates a cheaper version of topdressing resulting in a more level playing surface. Soil amendments such as gypsum are then applied to help break up any clay particles in the soil before we fertilized.
The whole practice took six days & I would like to say thank you to all our members & guests for your patience during this time.
See you on course,
Glenn Beauclerc.
Your Friendly Course Superintendent.
